Consultancy

The Edinburgh Fire Research Centre is able to offer a number of consultancy services. Please contact us (see below) for full details. Every job is tailored to the specific needs of the client, with care being taken to ensure that work is carried out to the highest standards and that reporting is done at the level required by the client. Confidentiality is ensured, if required.

Work undertaken

Recent consultancy projects have included works such as:

  • Analysis of the durablity of structures in fire
  • Modelling of the mixing of fuel vapour with air to determine when flammable mixtures might occur in a given scenario
  • Fire testing of certain polymeric materials
  • Computational fluid dynamics modelling of ventilation for smoke control in a road tunnel
  • Critically reviewing engineering reports produced by other agencies
  • Third party review of engineering projects
  • Ad hoc fire testing of construction materials
  • Carrying out literature reviews

Facilities

Experimental fire testing of material samples and constructions may be carried out, from bench scale to 'furniture' scale, in our state-of-the-art fire laboratory. Modelling studies can be carried out at all levels from simple hand calculations to highly detailed computer-intensive models requiring high performance parallel computing facilities. While we are able to undertake large projects, requiring several people working on a task for several months, we are also able to do small pieces of work which may be accomplished in less than a day on a small budget. Please contact us (see below) for details.
